A word from Trevin Hermosillo
WHY LIVE STREAMING?
Gearshift Garage Live Stream Racing started with a random Facebook ad. Sean Connell was looking for a co-driver to go from Cabo San Lucas to Tecate, Mexico. This is a 1,400-mile journey up the Baja Peninsula. I had no idea who Sean was at the time, but when we met, we instantly hit it off. Not only did I realize I had just made a new friend, but we also worked incredibly well as a team.
(If you watch the video above you can see the evolution of our streaming solution through the video)
At the time, I had already been dabbling in YouTube with Gearshift Garage and had built a modest following. Before leaving for Baja, I promised my audience that I would live stream the trip. What I didn’t realize was just how difficult it would be to reliably stream while driving through remote parts of Mexico.
Halfway through the trip, in Bahía de Los Ángeles, we stopped to regroup and figure out a solution. At the outdoor picnic table that doubled as the hotel restaurant Sean began piecing together software and hardware that would allow us to stream both in cab and exterior camera views simultaneously. It was rough and experimental, but it worked. People loved it. Viewers started tuning in and following along in real time as we traveled up the peninsula.
We realized we had stumbled onto something. Nobody was live streaming off-road racing in a way that kept both the viewer and the racer in mind. Nothing was easy, nothing was affordable.
Fast forward through eight months of nonstop research and development, countless late nights, failures, breakthroughs, and field testing in some of the harshest environments imaginable, and Gearshift Garage Live Stream Racing was born.
It wasn’t perfect from the start. We experienced major failures at events like the Baja 400, followed by huge successes, then more setbacks, then more breakthroughs. Every race, every stream, and every mistake pushed the platform forward into what it is today.
Since we are both racers, and this was built for racers, it was easy to reach out and get feedback from other racers. We want to keep things transparent, and the more involvement our customers have, the faster we can innovate. What we didn’t realize was just how powerful that would become. People want to be part of the team. The amount of kindness and support of what feels like people genuinely cheering us on has been astounding.
We want to make live streaming accessible to everyone. We want grandma at home to be able to watch her grand kids race in real time. We want grassroots racers and small teams to have the same ability to share their story as major productions. We also want professional events to be able to scale live coverage at a price point that’s actually affordable.
Ultimately, our vision is:
A live stream device in every race car at every race.
We couldn’t do it without the team we have on board now. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to do what I do and for the people who work tirelessly to make this dream come true.
Sean is a mad scientist. If you tell him something “can’t” be done, he’ll stay up all night just to prove you wrong. He is constantly innovating. We make sure he isn’t distracted by sales, emails, or crazy customers (you know who you are). Sean also wrenches and races about as much as someone working full time in the sport.
Andrew and I were introduced at the Mint 400. He and Sean are best friends. It didn't take long for me to realize he belonged on the team. We don’t use AI replies or outsource emails and phone calls overseas. Andrew handles technical support, customer emails, automation systems, and in field support. Between running his own business, racing, and wrenching, he dedicates whatever time it takes to be the operations manager here.
Gary is our social media guy. He spends most of his free time managing "Mountain Mafia", a brand he has grown to millions of views and hundreds of thousands of followers. He is a true salt of the earth guy who is always available to help. He’s posting, chopping up content, replying to DMs, and managing the REV Media side of things. If it’s on social media, you can thank Gary.
Julio has been responsible for some crazy brands throughout his career and his qualifications are insane. He is our creative and voice of reason. He keeps the brand looking sharp. With a ton of experience he keeps us on point.
Ema who is also my wife (Borat voice) says her job is to keep me alive and document it. She is responsible for 99.9% of all the photo and video content you see.
While we may seem like we have a team of 50, I assure you, it’s just us.
